One of the biggest talking points surrounding ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ is its R rating, with the Motion Picture Association classifying the film R for “violent content/bloody images.” It marks the first time in the 72-year history of the Godzilla franchise that a film has received an R rating.Yamazaki, who returns to direct after the success of ‘Minus One’, said the rating was essential to preserving certain scenes in the film. “There were certain scenes that, for me as a director, were so essential to the film. Censoring it or cutting it was just not an option for me,” he told Variety at the premiere.The filmmaker acknowledged that an R rating can limit the potential audience, but added, “I think the R-rating, at one point, carried almost a negative connotation. In more modern films, it actually creates a sort of expectation and excitement of, ‘Okay, well, they’re not censoring anything. The director and the cast’s voice is there, as is.’”Under MPA guidelines, audiences under 17 are generally required to be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian for R-rated films. ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ has already set the bar high as it goes ahead to clash with the Indian epic ‘Ramayana’ at the box office. The Japanese monster film will clash head-on with the Nitesh Tiwari directorial, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi and Yash in lead roles.Both films will arrive on the Diwali festive weekend. While ‘Gidzilla’ is set to hit screens on November 6, while ‘Ramayana’ has booked its release a day early, on November 5 in international markets.
