Washing fruits and vegetables before eating them is a good habit, but doing it before storing them is not always a great idea. In fact, some foods can spoil faster when they are washed and then put away without being dried properly. The extra moisture can encourage mould growth, affect their texture and shorten their shelf life. So, before you start washing everything after grocery shopping, here are five foods you should preferably leave unwashed until you are ready to use them.

1. Mushrooms

Mushrooms are like little sponges when it comes to moisture. Washing them and storing them while still damp can make them slimy and encourage spoilage. Instead, wipe away visible dirt with a damp cloth or soft brush just before cooking. Store them in a paper bag in the refrigerator to help manage excess moisture.

2. Strawberries

It is tempting to wash an entire box of strawberries as soon as you bring it home, but doing so can make them spoil sooner. Their delicate skin and tiny crevices can hold moisture, encouraging mould growth. Keep them unwashed and refrigerated, and rinse them under running water just before eating.

3. Grapes

Grapes have a natural protective coating on their skin that helps protect them and retain freshness. Washing them before storage can leave moisture between the tightly packed fruits, increasing the chances of spoilage. Keep them refrigerated in a ventilated container and wash only the portion you plan to eat.

4. Blueberries

These tiny berries may look like they need a good wash immediately, but it is better to wait. Washing them before refrigeration can remove their natural protective bloom and leave behind moisture that encourages mould. Store them dry in the refrigerator and rinse them gently before serving.

5. Fresh herbs

Fresh coriander, mint and parsley can lose their freshness quickly if they are washed and stored while wet. Excess moisture can make their leaves turn mushy and develop mould. Unless you are drying them properly before storage, it is better to wash fresh herbs just before use. You can also wrap them loosely in a paper towel and refrigerate them in a suitable container. The idea is not to skip washing your food altogether. It is simply about getting the timing right. Keep these foods dry while storing them, check for spoiled pieces regularly and wash them properly under running water before eating or cooking. A small change in your grocery routine can help reduce food waste and keep your produce fresh for longer.Thumb image: Canva (for representative purposes only)
