Indian Railways has been steadily expanding its fleet of modern trains, with Vande Bharat Express and Amrit Bharat Express emerging as two of the most recognisable names these days. While both the trains are designed to offer faster, safer and more relaxed journeys, they cater to different passenger segments and operate with distinctly different configurations.According to the Ministry of Railways, Vande Bharat services are positioned as semi-high-speed modern trainsets, while Amrit Bharat services were introduced primarily to provide an affordable modern long-distance travel option for low- and middle-income passengers. As of July 2026, Indian Railways reported 162 Vande Bharat Chair Car services, two Vande Bharat Sleeper services and 72 Amrit Bharat services.Let’s check out the main differences between these two trainsets:Vande Bharat, an AC trainset

The biggest difference is Vande Bharat Chair Car trains offer AC Chair Car and Executive Chair Car accommodation. The newer Vande Bharat Sleeper variant offers air-conditioned sleeper accommodation for long-distance journeys. The first regular Vande Bharat Sleeper service, between Howrah and Kamakhya, began operations on January 22, 2026.Amrit Bharat, a fully non-AC modern train

Amrit Bharat was specifically designed as an affordable, fully non-AC modern train. Its current standard composition consists of 11 General Class coaches, eight Sleeper Class coaches, one Pantry Car and two Luggage-cum-Divyangjan coaches. This means the two trains cater to different requirements:Vande Bharat focuses on premium, air-conditioned travelAmrit Bharat offers relatively affordable fares for a much wider section of passengersTechnology

Vande Bharat is a self-propelled trainset, which means it does not rely on a conventional locomotive at the front to haul all its coaches.Amrit Bharat is based on a push-pull configuration, with locomotives at both ends. This is intended to improve acceleration and reduce travel time while retaining the conventional locomotive-hauled format.Travel TimeVande Bharat has been designed for semi-high-speed operation, with Indian Railways specifying a design speed of 180 km/hr and an operating speed of up to 160 km/hr, subject to the route and infrastructure. The same is for the Vande Bharat Sleeper variant. However, this does not mean every Vande Bharat journey takes place at 160 kmph. The actual speed depends on track conditions, signalling, railway infrastructure, curves, traffic and other operational factors.Amrit Bharat is also designed as a faster long-distance train compared with conventional services, but it should not be described as having the same 160 kmph operating specification as Vande Bharat. Its main objective is to provide faster and affordable long-distance travel.FaresThere is no single fixed fare for either train because the final ticket price depends on the route, distance, class, catering and other applicable charges.Amrit Bharat has a separate fare structure for Second Class and Sleeper Class. The Railway Ministry’s published fare table shows, for example, that for a distance of 991–1,000 km, the basic fare is ₹324 for Second Class and ₹538 for Sleeper Class, before applicable additional charges. The fare structure was revised with effect from July 1, 2025.For Vande Bharat Sleeper, the Railway Ministry stated in March 2026 that the basic fare for 3AC was calculated at ₹2.40 per passenger-km, excluding GST. For a 1,000-km journey, this translated to an indicative basic fare of ₹2,400 for 3AC, before applicable charges.

Now there’s no definitive this or that. For passengers looking for air-conditioned accommodation, premium seating and faster acceleration, Vande Bharat is the best. For passengers prioritising affordability, sleeper accommodation and access to non-AC general and sleeper classes, Amrit Bharat is a practical choice. The most important part is that Indian Railways is not using one train model to serve every passenger. While Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat represent two different categories, both are focused on offering travellers best-in-class modern services under their defined budget.
